Perkins wins Senate District 4 Republican primary

Chad Perkins of Dover-Foxcroft, who currently holds the House District 31 seat, has won the Republican primary for Senate District 4 following ranked-choice tabulations by the Maine Secretary of State’s Office in Augusta.

In ranked choice voting races, the winner must receive a majority – more than 50% – of the vote.

With 27 of 29 municipalities reporting, Chad Perkins of Dover-Foxcroft had led with 2,696 votes or 47.9% of the total. He was followed by Joseph Guerin of Glenburn with 1,815 votes (32.2%), Zachary Wood of Levant with 892 votes (15.8%) and Gregory Pierce of Glenburn with 230 votes (4.1%).

Pierce was eliminated after the first round of ranked-choice tabulations. Following round two, Wood was eliminated, leaving Perkins the winner and Guerin as the runner-up.

Votes are tabulated in rounds, with the lowest-ranking candidate eliminated each round until two remain. The candidate determined to have received the majority (more than 50%) of the votes in the final round is declared the winner. 

Senate District 4 consists of all of Piscataquis County and several nearby Penobscot County towns.

Party candidates who are elected at the primary qualify to appear on the November general election ballot with the election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Lisa G. Kalp, D-Corinth, was the only Senate District 4 candidate on the Democratic primary ballot.

Andrew R. Torbett, R-Atkinson Township, a Piscataquis County commissioner, is running for House District 31. Eric Boothroyd of Dover-Foxcroft is the Democratic candidate for the House seat.
