1 of Baxter State Park’s 2 roads remains closed because of winter damage

By Christopher Burns, Bangor Daily News Staff

One of the two roads in Baxter State Park will remain closed for now because of winter damage.

Roaring Brook Road sustained “significant damage” during the winter, according to Baxter State Park.

That has delayed its reopening.

As a result, reservations at Roaring Brook Campground for May 15-23 have been canceled, and there will be no access for vehicles to the campground and to trailheads to Katahdin Lake, Russell Pond and the east side of Katahdin.

“We are working to repair the road as soon as possible, and will provide status updates to Roaring Brook campground reservation holders and to the general public,” park staff said in a social media post.

Roaring Brook Road is one of the two major roads providing access to Baxter State Park’s interior. The other, Park Tote Road, connects the Togue Pond and Matagamon gatehouses, as well as provides access to a majority of the park’s campgrounds and trailheads.
