Leaving a legacy of life, April is Donate Life Month

BANGOR – Northern Light Health is proud to continue its support of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Each April, Northern Light Health honors donors who chose to be organ and tissue donors at their death, as well as their families, transplant recipients, and those who continue to wait during Donate Life Month. There is no greater gift than the gift of life, and the decision to make a difference begins with you.

Transplant teams throughout New England work with New England Donor Services to procure organs from suitable patients, then transplant the organs at transplant centers. Northern Light Health hospitals do not perform transplants, but actively support organ, tissue, and eye donation.

In 2023, Northern Light Health hospitals recorded the following activity:

  • Eastern Maine Medical Center supported 11 organ donors, with 29 organs donated for transplantation
  • One kidney, one lung, and two pancreases were accepted to research programs
  • Twenty-five tissue donors at Eastern Maine Medical Center, with other Northern Light Health hospitals accounting for an additional eight donors. From these donors, a total of 71 tissues were donated
