Greenville Planning Board mulls fence ordinance

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Planning Board for some months has been collecting information on fence ordinances in Maine. At the March 6 meeting, planning board members reviewed a preliminary draft of an ordinance and marked it up for further discussion and drafting.

The board is responding to resident requests for an ordinance that might help avoid potential conflicts between neighbors concerning fence issues. Also, the state’s mandate to increase housing density in Maine cities and towns will likely focus local attention on fences.

In recent years the planning board with the approval of town residents has added or amended ordinances on cannabis, a multigenerational overlay district, outdoor lighting, signs, solar energy, and telecommunication facilities.

The proposed fence ordinance will be presented to the select board later in the spring and brought before town residents at the town meeting on June 3.

The planning board meets at 5 p.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month and is open to the public. Questions? Contact Ron Sarol, Greenville code enforcement officer, at 207-695-2421 or ceo@greenvilleme.com or John Contreni, planning board chair, at 207-695-3871 or jcontreni@outlook.com.
