PCSWCD to hold gravel roads workshop

DOVER-FOXCROFT — On Thursday, Nov. 2 the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a gravel roads workshop at the municipal building, 48 Morton Avenue, from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

This workshop will be led by John Maclaine, Non-Point Source Training Center coordinator with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The gravel roads workshop will have both classroom and field components and discuss maintenance, hydrology, proper ditching technique, crowning, water diversions and more. Additionally, Maclaine will recommend practices for creating stable road conditions that minimize impact to nearby water bodies, discuss the importance of Best Management Practices, erosion control methods and the impact poor management has on aquatic organisms and the waters in which they live. The field component of the workshop will include site visits to discuss maintenance plans and implementation of information learned. This workshop provides a great educational opportunity for contractors, municipalities and road associations as well as the general public. Four CEU’s are available for folks seeking continuing education credits.

Registration is required and can be completed at www.piscataquisswcd.org. Please contact the Piscataquis County Soil & Water Conservation District at 207-564-2321 ext. 3 or at info@piscataquisswcd.org for more information about this program.
