Theatre offers ‘Intro to Storyboarding’ afterschool program

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre, in collaboration with STAY aweSTEM and the Onion Foundation, is excited to launch a free afterschool art elective this fall. “Principals of Filmmaking and Animation: Intro to Storyboarding,” will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.  from Oct. 10 through Nov. 15. This innovative 6-week course will merge in-person instruction at the Center Theatre for the Performing Arts with virtual sessions via Google Meet.

The class is open to students in grades 7-12. Class size is limited, and advance registration is required. With a “pay-what-you-can” approach, the program aims to be inclusive and accessible, allowing participants to decide their contribution amount. The curriculum, led by CEO and Chief of Education of Stay aweSTEM Robin “Professor Robin” Kirk, focuses on the fundamentals of storycraft and storyboarding, a crucial component in filmmaking and animation since the early 1900s. Students will learn to construct narratives through storyboards, covering aspects like main storyboarding images, written narrative captions, and FX usages, requiring no prerequisites or drawing skills. Kirk is a native of Abbot, and is passionate about bringing her experience and knowledge to kids in the community.

Patrick Myers, executive director of Center Theatre, said, “This opportunity to provide a world-class educational program in filmmaking and animation is thrilling. We hope to see a high level of interest so we can continue offering such innovative programs in the future. The program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of The Onion Foundation.”
