Evans bill to amend law regarding expiration of disability plates and placards goes into effect

AUGUSTA – A bill sponsored by Rep. Richard Evans, D-Dover-Foxcroft, that amends the law regarding expiration of disability plates and placards, goes into effect Monday.

LD 1762 amends the law so that an applicant is not required to continue to provide proof of disability upon renewal of the applicant’s disability plate or placard. In addition, a disability plate or placard may be renewed for a period of up to six years.

“I’m pleased that this bill is becoming law,” said Evans. “Transportation in rural areas of the state, like my district, pose huge challenges for people with disabilities, both for those who are still driving and need placards or those who can no longer drive but still require transportation. Allowing a disability plate or placard to be issued for up to six years will help to make it more convenient for our neighbors with disabilities.”

Evans is a physician and surgeon and represents the communities of Atkinson, Brownville, Dover-Foxcroft, Lake View, Medford, Milo and Orneville Township in Piscataquis County. He serves on the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee.
