Storm now forecast to dump up to another 18 inches on Bangor

The late week winter storm tightening its grip on Maine is now forecast to dump up to 18 inches of fresh snow across the interior.

Nearly the entire state has now been placed under a winter storm warning from late Thursday morning to Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.

This storm comes on the heels of a weekend nor’easter that pummeled parts of Maine with as much as 22 inches of snow.

The storm will begin Thursday with rain before changing to snow overnight as cold air blows south and linger into Friday evening.

Greater Bangor is forecast to see 12 to 18 inches of snow, with similar accumulation expected across a wide swath of the interior from Dover-Foxcroft to Houlton, according to the weather service office in Caribou.

To the north, that forecast snowfall will lessen somewhat, with 8 to 12 inches on tap from Presque Isle up to Van Buren. The northernmost reaches of the state from Fort Kent to Estcourt Station will see only between 2 to 6 inches.

Snowfall will be markedly lower, as well, along the immediate coast, with only 4 to 6 inches forecast in Portland and 6 to 8 inches in Rockland and Bar Harbor. Coastal Washington County is expected to see as much as a foot of snow from Machias to Eastport, according to the weather service offices in Caribou and Gray.

Moving up to the western mountains, which were largely spared from the most recent storm, the forecast calls for 12 to 18 inches across the region from Rangeley up to Jackman near the Canadian border, the weather station in Gray reported.
