16 more Mainers have died and another 1,576 coronavirus cases reported since the weekend

Sixteen more Mainers have died and another 1,576 coronavirus cases reported across the state since the weekend, Maine health officials said Tuesday.

Tuesday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 168,474, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s up from 166,898 on Saturday

Of those, 123,626 have been confirmed positive, while 44,848 were classified as “probable cases,” the Maine CDC reported.

The statewide death toll stands at 1,714.

The most cases have been detected in Mainers younger than 20, while Mainers over 80 years old account for the largest portion of deaths. More cases have been recorded in women and more deaths in men.

So far, 3,816 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Information about those who are currently hospitalized wasn’t immediately available.

Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (17,140), Aroostook (8,149), Cumberland (33,989), Franklin (4,271), Hancock (4,943), Kennebec (16,296), Knox (4,017), Lincoln (3,572), Oxford (8,443), Penobscot (19,263), Piscataquis (2,178), Sagadahoc (3,459), Somerset (7,192), Waldo (4,181), Washington (3,032) and York (28,344) counties. Information about where an additional five cases were reported wasn’t immediately available.

As of Tuesday morning, the coronavirus had sickened 71,709,180 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as caused 868,512 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
