Retired educators news

The Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association met at Our FAMBily Restaurant in Dexter (yes, that’s Penobscot County but since we welcome all educators we decided to venture south for this meeting) on June 22. Fifteen retired educators enjoyed a delicious lunch, a short business meeting and a very informative presentation by our very own Linda Pratt. Since retiring from SAD 68, Pratt has been part of the Challenger Learning Center in Bangor. She provided those in attendance an overview of the Center; from the historical opening in February 2004, the types of programs (missions) offered and how the pandemic changed their way of presenting to Maine students. Anyone wishing to learn more can contact the Learning Center at www.astronaut.org or at 207-990-2900.

IN RETIREMENT — Linda Pratt was the guest speaker at the June meeting of the Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association.

In other business, President Rheba Michaud presented Caroline Williams with the 2019 Award for “Time of Service” and thanked her for her many hours of volunteering in a variety of settings in Piscataquis County. Due to the pandemic there was no award for 2020. The members voted to change the recipients of our “Annual Day of Caring” program for the 2021 year. When several grandmothers in the group noticed that the medical kits at local school events are often inadequately equipped to handle the needs of the coaches and players they requested that we consider helping our local athletic directors keep those kits replenished as needed. Janie Lander will chair this mission.

Each year a PCREA Scholarship for $400 is awarded to a graduating senior at one of the four high schools in Piscataquis County. The monies are available to the graduate at the start of their second semester pending academic success. This year was an unusual year with more requests than normal and the members voted to remain with one award for one graduate rotating between the four schools.

We concluded our meeting with a time of reveling in the joy that one of our treasured members, Martha Rollins, was quietly celebrating her 102nd birthday at her home with her family on this day. Congratulations, Martha!

The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27 in Monson at Lakeshore House. All retired educators are welcome to attend.
