Five more Mainers die and another 425 coronavirus cases are reported across the state

Another five Mainers have died as health officials on Tuesday reported 425 more coronavirus cases across the state.

The number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the past 14 days statewide is 5,603. This is an estimation of the current number of active cases in the state, as the Maine CDC is no longer tracking recoveries for all patients. That’s down from 5,749 on Monday.

Two men and three women have succumbed to the virus, bringing the statewide death toll to 777. Two lived in Androscoggin County, one in Cumberland County, one in Oxford County and one in Piscataquis County. Of those, three were in their 80s and two in their 70s and 50s.

Tuesday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 60,430, according to the Maine CDC. That’s up from 60,005 on Monday

Of those, 45,059 have been confirmed positive, while 15,371 were classified as “probable cases,” the Maine CDC reported.

The new case rate statewide Tuesday was 3.18 cases per 10,000 residents, and the total case rate statewide was 451.51.

Maine’s seven-day average for new coronavirus cases is 361.4, up from 359.3 a day ago, down from 452.4 a week ago and up from 196.6 a month ago. That average peaked on Jan. 14 at 625.3.

The most cases have been detected in Mainers in their 20s, while Mainers over 80 years old make up the majority of deaths. More cases and deaths have been recorded in women than men.

So far, 1,829 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Information about those who are currently hospitalized wasn’t immediately available.

The total statewide hospitalization rate on Tuesday was 13.67 patients per 10,000 residents.

Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (7,032), Aroostook (1,643), Cumberland (15,958), Franklin (1,205), Hancock (1,223), Kennebec (5,556), Knox (957), Lincoln (826), Oxford (3,176), Penobscot (5,311), Piscataquis (439), Sagadahoc (1,238), Somerset (1,843), Waldo (826), Washington (825) and York (12,370) counties. Information about where an additional two cases were reported wasn’t immediately available.

An additional 5,869 Mainers have been vaccinated against the coronavirus in the previous 24 hours. As of Tuesday, 613,854 Mainers have received a first dose of the vaccine, while 483,953 have received a final dose.
As of Tuesday morning, the coronavirus had sickened 32,125,549 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as caused 572,696 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
