Railing against their own behavior

To the Editor;

I am writing about the “Resolution of Protest for Piscataquis County” put forth by the three county commissioners. They assert that because they received a majority vote they have the right to speak for the entire county.  As far as I know, there was no effort to get input from anyone else. Certainly not from me. They made a unilateral decision to speak for the entire county. The “resolution” contains misinformation about COVID-19 including the official name … it is not the Wuhan virus. Wuhan is the place it was first diagnosed, not the name of the virus. The resolution urges the Governor and others to ignore medical protocol to reduce the infection rate. They ignore the evidence that social gatherings where people do not wear masks and socially distance produces spikes in the incidence of infection. The resolution states that the COVID-19 virus is practically non-existent in the county. If you go to the Maine CDC website, you will see how quickly the incident of infection is rising in the county.

They assert they have the God given, inalienable, constitutional social right to do as they please … freedom to determine the direction of their own lives. Which translates to me as the right to infect themselves, their families, their neighbors and their communities. They seem to have missed the irony that their behavior is exactly what they are railing against.

I write this not as a Republican, Democrat, Independent, Socialist, Fascist, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or Atheist. I write this as a citizen of Piscataquis County who is exhausted at every level of my being trying to cope with the devastation wrought by this pandemic. What exactly has the county commissioners group done to ease the devastation except demand their right to do as they please and point fingers.
