Wilderness Sled Dog Race in Greenville Feb. 1

GREENVILLE — Nothing says winter in the Maine Highlands more than dogsledding. Since 2004, the Wilderness Sled Dog Race has been an annual event (weather permitting) in Greenville. The race has featured mushers from Iditarod veterans to rookies running in their first professional event.

Once again, the race will start and finish at the Leisure Life Resort and Trailside Restaurant at 33 Leisure Life Road on Saturday, Feb. 1. The 70-mile race starts at 8:30 a.m. and an hour later teams competing in the 30-mile race take off.

MUSHING NEAR MOOSEHEAD LAKE — A team competes in a past version of the Wilderness Sled Dog Race in Greenville. This year’s two races, a 70-mile course and a 30-mile competition, are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1.

The venue will also feature activities for all ages, a community bonfire, a silent auction and a chance to meet and watch the most excited four-legged athletes in the world. It takes a huge effort to put this all together, and as with most non-profit organizations, fundraising remains one of the most challenging parts of the process. We are very appreciative of our business partners in the local community who provide significant financial support, but we would also like to reach out to any individuals who may be interested in making a donation.

If you would be inclined to help with a tax-deductible contribution of any amount, you can send a check to: Wilderness Sled Dog Racing Association, PO Box  311, Greenville, ME 04441, and thank you.
