Smith brothers win three events at state track meet qualifier
BREWER — Brothers Jackson and Landon Smith of the Foxcroft Youth Track club combined to win three events and place in the top two in four overall during the 14 & Under USATF-Maine Association State Championship Group D qualifier on Aug. 1 at the Brewer Community School.
Jackson Smith — a rising eighth-grader SeDoMoCha Middle School — had his division’s best performance in the age 13-14 high jump as he cleared the bar at a height of 5 feet, 4 inches, winning by eight inches. Smith also came in second in the age 13-14 100 meters, sprinting a time of 12.81 seconds to qualify for the state meet.
Landon Smith — who will be in grade 6 at SeDoMoCha when classes resume near the end of the month — finished in first place in the age 11-12 100 with a time of 14.34 seconds, besting second place by more than a second.
Smith also came in first in the age 11-12 long jump at a distance of 12-02.50, winning the event by over a foot and a half.
The Smith brothers qualified for the state meet scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Brewer Community School, with the day’s events starting at 9 a.m.
Kaydance Sheridan of Foxcroft Youth Track took part in the girls’ Group D state qualifier.
Her throw of 15-01.25 was good for fourth place in the age 11-12 shot put, but Sheridan will be unable to take part in the Aug. 10 competition so the athlete with the fifth-place throw earned the spot.
Sheridan was also eighth in the age 11-12 javelin with a throw of 30-09.
