UMaine Extension participating in One Tomato project

DOVER-FOXCROFT — University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Piscataquis County Extension Association will be distributing 400 locally grown tomato seedlings at various locations in Piscataquis County beginning Saturday, June 1 at the Black Fly Festival in Milo. Beginning June 3 seedlings also will be available at the UMaine Extension office in Dover-Foxcroft, 165 East Main Street, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., each Monday, Thursday and Friday until gone.

This is the sixth year UMaine Extension is participating in the One Tomato project, which originated in Ontario, Canada to encourage households to plant, grow and eat more vegetables. According to Extension professor Donna Coffin, “If you’ve got a sunny spot and a bag of potting soil, you can grow one tomato.”

This year’s tomato varieties from Ellis’ Greenhouse and Nursery in Hudson include Jasper, Sungold and Esterina. For more information and a full schedule of distribution locations, please contact 564-3301 or extension.piscataquis@maine.edu. More information is also available on the UMaine Extension Piscataquis County website.
