Upcoming workshop on The Alexander Technique
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Do you suffer from back, neck or joint pain? Do you experience chronic muscle stiffness or tension? Do you have anxiety or stress-related conditions or have vocal or breathing problems? An upcoming workshop on The Alexander Technique might be just what you need.
The Alexander Technique, first described by F.M. Alexander around 1900, helps to re-establish the natural balance of the head, neck and back and to promote ease of movement in all activities of daily life. It is a method that helps the person to become aware of habits that may lead to functional and comfort problems. Its benefits are wide-ranging including improvement in performance, prevention of injury in music, drama and sport, enhancement of public presentation skills, support in pregnancy and childbirth, improved stability, balance and coordination. It has helped people with chronic asthma and bronchitis and vocal chord problems. It has been widely applied in centered horseback riding and among theater professionals and musicians whose rigorous daily practice routines can lead to painful stress conditions in the body.
Alexander teacher and author, Ruth Rootberg, will be presenting hands-on workshop on Saturday, April 13 with an open to the public presentation Friday, April 12 at The Commons at Central Hall. Author of “Living the Alexander Technique” and “Living the Alexander Technique, Volume II, Aging with Poise,” Rootberg was trained in voice and theater. She discovered the benefits of The Alexander Technique early in her performing career and has become a well-respected teacher in the United States and abroad.
The public introductory presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. will give an overview of The Alexander Technique and its benefits and costs $10. All community members are welcome. The weekend workshop will include the evening presentation plus a full day of hands-on demonstration and bodywork for a small group. Following this each participant will receive a 1-hour individual private consultation with Rootberg in order to personalize the plan. Cost for the entire workshop is $200. Class size limited to 12 participants. Tuition support is available.
The Alexander Technique is helpful at any age. Rootberg says, “It is possible for practically anyone to rediscover freedom and ease in movement, and to feel younger, lighter, taller, calmer and more confident” by applying the principles of the “skillful use of the self.”
