District seeking junior representative for community forestry committee
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) is excited to announce a fantastic opportunity for a local high school or college-aged student. We are seeking a junior representative to serve on our Community Forestry Committee — a subcommittee of our board. This is a great, resume-building opportunity for young adults in our area to be a part of community decisions that impact the overall health of our environment and the protection and conservation of our natural resources.
Volunteering at the PCSWCD’s junior representative would be an excellent way for students interested in natural resource careers to gain hands-on insight and knowledge about forestry and land management, non-profit structures, grant administration, community projects and educational outreach. This opportunity would also provide our junior representative with a unique way to log community service hours and build their resumes, all while learning about how public lands are managed.

A YOUNGER VOICE FOR THE PCSWCD — PCSWCD Junior Representative Emily Dickison, left, stands with staff member Lynn Lubas and board member Toby Hall at the district’s public land, the Law Farm. Dickison has worked with PCSWCD since 2015 to shape and improve the PCSWCD’s public lands. The district is now seeking a high school or college student to serve as junior representative for the Community Forest Committee.
Over the past several years, the PCSWCD has made incredible strides in developing and improving our two community forests that total over 400 acres — the Law Farm in Dover-Foxcroft and Demonstration Forest in Williamsburg. Through grants, various community service projects and a diverse line-up of natural resource conservation programs, we have been able to accomplish so much, including building trails on the properties, planting thousands of trees, hosting several youth and family oriented events, trainings for professionals, and also working with members of our community to maintain each of these lands for public use. All of this groundwork is just that, the start of many future projects and programs aimed to connect community members with what can be learned and gained from these two public forests.
Individuals interested in joining our Community Forestry Committee as the junior representative must be available to participate in occasional events at our forests and attend committee meetings, which are held occasionally throughout the year. Interested individuals should submit a letter of intent to the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA Service Center, 42 Engdahl Drive, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426 or emailed to info@piscataquisswcd.org. The letter should include your full contact information, references and also express your desires and qualifications to be a part of this dynamic committee.
