PRYMCA Water Wellness program lowers pain and increases mobility
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Come to the Piscataquis Regional YMCA and enjoy the warm waters of the indoor pool. The PRYMCA offers older adult swim programs that help increase physical activity and improve health. These programs provide opportunities for individuals to begin or continue an exercise routine in an environment that provides resistance, as well as buoyancy, which helps reduces stress on joints when compared to other physical activities. Swimming and aquatic programs may reduce the risk of muscle loss as one ages as well as improve cardiovascular endurance, range of motion and mental well-being.
In February, the PRYMCA will begin new session of Water Wellness. This effective program is suitable for members of the community who have arthritis, joint replacements, fibromyalgia, or other neuromuscular complications. Participants are led through a series of warm-water exercises designed to help reduce pain and inflammation and promote increased flexibility and strength.
Water Wellness participant Meredith Perkins reported increased strength and well being after participating in the program, “After my two hip replacement surgeries, and one revision surgery, I needed to do some consistent exercising. So I tried the Y’s Water Wellness class and have really loved it. It has been such a benefit to me, both physically and mentally. (Instructor/PRYMCA Aquatics Manager Britney Gallagher) is so upbeat and friendly, she makes the class enjoyable and fun! It’s also been great socializing with the others in the class as we exercise. I feel stronger all over, my balance has improved, and it’s no longer a must for me to use my cane to walk. I’m so happy I found this class to get me out of the house this winter! Thank you, Britney and the Y for offering this program.”
Each Water Wellness session provides a friendly and supportive environment that encourages social interaction. Classes are led by a trained Aquatic Exercise Association program leader and meet twice weekly for one hour. Although the classes are held in the water, swimming skills are not necessary. Join a class today and feel better together.
