Helping Hands with Heart recruiting two RecoveryCorps members

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Helping Hands with Heart (HHH) and the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) are pleased to be partnering with Healthy Acadia to launch Maine RecoveryCorps. Maine RecoveryCorps is funded by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is focused on expanding recovery coaching to strengthen recovery support services and to improve recovery success among individuals facing substance use disorders, with an emphasis on opioid use disorders.

HHH & PCEDC are two of many organizations across Aroostook, Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, and Washington counties that will host RecoveryCorps members beginning in January. HHH & PCEDC are currently recruiting for two RecoveryCorps members to serve in the Maine Highlands region. In total, Maine RecoveryCorps will support 30 or more members across the 6-county region. RecoveryCorps members will engage in recovery coaching, an innovative form of peer-to-peer recovery support. RecoveryCorps coaches will serve as personal guides and mentors for people seeking recovery, helping them remove barriers and navigate systems to meet their treatment, wellness and recovery support goals. RecoveryCorps coaches have typically experienced substance use disorder and recovery either directly themselves or through someone close to them.

HHH & PCEDC are seeking two RecoveryCorps positions who will serve 32-40 hours per week between January and August, with the option to start either in January or March. During their service term, members will receive a living allowance of $6,866, a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,960 that they can use to pay for college or to pay down student loans. They will also receive mileage, training, and more. Individuals 55 or older at the time of their AmeriCorps service may transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child. Members will have the potential to continue into a second full year of service starting in September.

“The RecoveryCorps Program represents a significant expansion of recovery coaching services across a broad region,” said Elsie Flemings, executive director of Healthy Acadia. “We’re thrilled that the Corporation for National and Community Service has recognized the need to expand services to support individuals seeking recovery from opioid and other substance use disorders, and that they saw the value that AmeriCorps members can bring in the form of recovery coaching. These AmeriCorps members will meet pressing local needs as they develop civic and leadership skills that will last a lifetime.”
