Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition to discuss ‘ECO-Agrarianism’ at Dec. 7 event

DEXTER — On Friday, Dec. 7 Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) will host its monthly free public discussion on the topic of “ECO-Agrarianism,” how farmers and working people can act in their own community to move in directions that can both create sustainability and increase community quality of life as well as prosperity.

Gar Roper, the featured speaker, will introduce the topic at 6 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Abbott Memorial Library, followed as usual by an opportunity for all attendees to add their perspectives and experiences until the evening’s close at 8 p.m. — note that recent renovations to the sidewalks around the library have made slight changes to previous parking and access routes to the building.

The basics of Roper’s talk include every society depends on two resources: the land and the workers; restoring the central importance of the land and the people who live in the community and create its purpose; quality of life depends on communities that protect, manage and support these resources; sustainability of resources needs to be held above exploitation of resources for profit; democratic government must address the common good as expressed by majority and minority viewpoints; and polarized politics has divided and defeated the common good and eroded community.

DDATT’s mission is to help move our local communities into higher levels of self-governance, knowledge of local resources, and independence from external energy imports. The more we share what we know, the stronger we’ll be.
