Deck the Halls celebration in Greenville set for Nov. 24

GREENVILLE — With the first significant snowfall of the season, it’s time to think of all things Christmassy in Greenville. And what better way to kick things off than to participate in the annual Deck the Halls celebration, taking place all day on Saturday, Nov. 24. Lots of new and exciting events are planned for this year including a chance to visit with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus at the American Legion, Cecil R. Cole Post 94, at 218 Pritham Ave.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be delighted to meet the little ones and hear their Christmas wishes between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Cameras are encouraged!

The shops in downtown Greenville will be decorated and ready for Christmas shoppers from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Look for sales and special promotions at participating businesses and be part of a brand new activity – Santa’s Checklist. Here’s how it works: pick up your checklist at a participating business and then get it stamped by visiting all the other businesses and shops on the list. Bring your list to the Greenville Gazebo by 4 p.m. to be entered in a drawing for some very special prizes donated by the participating businesses and organizations.

If you’re looking for that perfect Christmas tree, the Firefighters Association will be holding a sale of select trees at Greenville School on Pritham Ave. And, in the Cafeteria at the school, the Mistletoe Market Place will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. You may find that perfect ornament for your tree or a special gift for someone you love. Come on in and browse all the offerings! In addition, the Thrift Shop at the Union Church in downtown Greenville will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., tempting you with quality items in a special Christmas sale. Stop in at the Center for Moosehead History on Lakeview St. and pick up a Moosehead History Gift Basket – perfect for anyone who loves this area and its unique history. They will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

How about Pet Photos with Santa? Your pooch or kitty or possibly pet fish would make a great subject and provide you with a picture you can cherish for years to come. Photos will be taken for a donation to the Wilderness Sled Dog Race to be held in February 2019. Visit the Artisan Cottages in downtown Greenville located between Mud Puddle Mercantile and the future home of the Puckerbrush Grille.

At this point you might be a little hungry. No worries! Between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. local restaurants will be providing Home for the Holidays Lunch and Dinner Specials.

At 3 p.m., participants will line up for the annual Deck The Halls Parade at the Industrial Park in Greenville Junction. It’s not too late for your group, club or business to join in the fun. Just show up in the Industrial Park at Woody’s parking lot and join the fun. The parade will officially start at 3:30 p.m. and proceed along Pritham Ave. to the Katahdin parking lot in downtown Greenville, after swinging by the local Nursing Home at Northern Light/C.A. Dean Hospital.

At 4 p.m. the Lights of Life Tree Lighting Ceremony will occur at the Gazebo near the Katahdin. If you would like to dedicate a tree light to a loved one, visit www.emhfoundation.org for information. In addition to lighting the Christmas tree, folks will be encouraged to join in singing traditional Christmas carols and, if you’re a bit chilly, hot cocoa will be available to warm you up.

At 5 p.m. there will be a Mass at the Catholic Family Church on Pritham Ave. All are welcome. And, to round out the evening, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. there will be two Alumni Basketball Games going on at the Greenville High School Gym. The games are sponsored by the Greenville Sports Boosters, with proceeds going to the 2019 GHS Basketball teams going to Gold Rush.

Remember when we mentioned the Santa Checklist? The winner’s name will be drawn sometime before or between the games. And, depending on how many stamps you collected on your Santa Checklist, you could win up to 23 gifts from participating businesses and organizations!

If you have any questions regarding the festivities, contact Bethany Young at the Greenville Town Office at 695-2421. Come home to Greenville on Saturday, Nov. 24. It’s an all-day celebration you and your family won’t want to miss!
