Hiker rescued after breaking ankle climbing Mount Katahdin

An injured hiker was airlifted out of Baxter State Park to Millinocket Municipal Airport on Sept. 27 by Maine Forest Service helicopter. The 57-year-old woman from western Maine suffered an angulated ankle fracture as she ascended the Chimney Pond Trail the evening before.

After an assisted walk and litter carry by park staff and a team of volunteers including the injured hiker’s family members, she arrived at the Chimney Pond campground at 2 a.m. where she was under the care of staff for the remainder of the night.

Baxter State Park staff would like to thank the Maine Forest Service and Chief Ranger Pilot John Crowley and Millinocket Fire Department Deputy Chief Tom Malcolm and 2nd Assistant Matt Farrington as well as the team of volunteers for their assistance with this rescue.

The difficult terrain, wet conditions, and developing darkness likely contributed to the accident. Park officials advise hikers make sure they have a functional flashlight and are carrying manageable packs for the rocky, challenging hikes in this wilderness park.

“Thanks to the professionalism of Park staff, the Maine Forest Service, and the Millinocket Fire Department, this rescue went very smoothly,” said Park Director Eben Sypitkowski.
