Foxcroft Academy Horizon Scholarships to fund five students’ summer experiences

DOVER-FOXCROFt — Three current Foxcroft Academy students and two incoming students were presented Horizon Scholarships by Tom Lizotte of the Foxcroft Academy Board of Trustees at a May 9 assembly. Horizon Scholarships provide financial support for exceptional academic experiences not presently offered at Foxcroft Academy. Students in grades 8-11 who are (or will be) enrolled as a full-time student at Foxcroft Academy are eligible to apply, as are faculty members. Horizon Scholarships are funded by income generated from 15 named endowed Horizon Scholarship funds within Foxcroft Academy’s endowment. This year $4,390 was awarded to students including:

Thanks to the help of the Linda Gammon Fine Arts Horizon Scholarship Fund, Mark Kilmer ’19 who will attend jazz camp this summer at UMaine-Farmington. Kilmer is a percussionist with the Foxcroft Academy band.

With help from the Shirley Gammon Horizon Fund, Chloe Hamele ’19 was able to travel with and attend the New York City college tour in April. They visited three city universities and saw many historic landmarks including the Statue of Liberty. Several members of the group even made it on “The Today Show” on NBC.

Jacob Ireland ’20 will take his talents to Boston this summer to attend the National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine, thanks in part to help from the Jim Brown Fund.

SeDoMoCha Middle School students and rising members of the Pony Herd, Diana Voter ’22 and Connor Plante ’22 will both have great summer experiences thanks to Horizon Scholarships. Voter will attend various YMCA camps through funding from the Gordon and Wilma Andrews Fund and Plante will be a student at the Bossov Ballet summer intensive in Pittsfield with help from the Peter and Marion Plouff Fund.

Since 1993, the Horizon Scholarship program has awarded more than $135,000 to over 200 students searching for unique life and learning experiences outside the regular classroom. The Foxcroft Academy Board of Trustees is grateful to those alumni and friends who deemed these opportunities to be of such vital importance to our students that they created these endowed scholarship funds, some of which are listed above. Other funds not awarded this year include the Richard Snyder Fund, Barb Goodwin Fund, A. Steward Bush Horizon Fund, Michael P. Bush Horizon Fund, Terrance Bush Horizon Fund, Louis Philpot Fund, Foxcroft Academy Scholarship Association Horizon Fund, Ivan Marshall Fund, Everett and Evelyn Johnston Fund, and the Virginia Preston Art Studies Horizon Fund.
