Eva (Towle) Sherwood
Eva M. Sherwood, 95, passed away July 2, 2016. She was born October 3, 1920, in Old Town, daughter of Merritt Towle and Leona Beaulieu Towle.
A child of French Island, Eva swam in the Penobscot River and hunted and fished with her parents and cousins at the camp in Greenfield. French was a life-long second language. Eva was a graduate of Old Town High School and Maine School of Commerce (now Husson University).
In April 1941, Eva married Lowell Sherwood, the love of her life. Eva and Lowell celebrated their 74th anniversary together before Lowell’s death in July 2015.
Lowell and Eva were equal partners, at home or office, but Eva was always the chief financial officer; she handled the checkbook!
In 1974, they sold their various businesses, and hit the open road. For 3 decades, they wintered in Florida and toured the country with friends in their Winnebago and camping along the Maine coast with grandchildren on summer days. In 1986, they built a home in Hampden near their sons so Papa could always be ready to help with a project and Gramie could spoil the grandchildren.
Eva is survived by two sons, Lowell Sherwood, Jr. and wife, Mary, Charles and wife, Rebecca; four grandchildren, Kate, Ben, Elizabeth, Jason; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Spencer.
A very special thank you from Eva’s family to the staff at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion (4 West) and Androscoggin Hospice for the extraordinary care and comfort given to our Mother and to the wonderful neighbors on George Street who were always there for Mom and Dad.
A Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass for Lowell and Eva will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2016, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. Interment will be in Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
