Joseph F. Barbarow Jr., 67, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 25, 2016, in Bucksport. Born in Newport, RI, on February 26, 1949, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Sr. and Frances (Brawner) Barbarow.
Joseph served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to the states, he continued his service as a drill sergeant in the Army Reserves and worked alongside his father running Barbarow Painting. He joined the Newport Fire Department in 1976 as a firefighter, where he proudly served the citizens of Aquidneck Island for 28 years before his retirement in 2003. Joseph loved to work with his hands whether it was wood working, building models or gardening. At the heart of it all, he was a family man who adored and treasured his grandchildren and his faithful canine companion, Jake.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (Burns) Barbarow of Bucksport; his daughter, Kathleen (Barbarow) Marks and her husband, Sean, of Bucksport; his son, Joseph F. Barbarow III and his wife, Jillene, of North Kingstown, RI; his beloved grandchildren, Delaney Marks, Sierra Marks, Riley Marks, all of Bucksport, and Heather Barbarow of North Kingstown, RI; his two sisters, Kathleen Sanchez and her husband, Hugo, of Manchester, CT, and Elizabeth Terra and her husband, William, of Camp Verde, AZ; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, whose lives he touched in so many ways. He was predeceased by his parents.
