Heaven gained another angel when Nicholas W. George, 82, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016, with his wife and best friend, Grace, by his side. He was born August 16, 1933, in Natick, Massachusetts, the son of Naoum G. George and Eleftheria (Vassil) George.
Nick was a graduate of Stearns High School, class of 1952. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-56, during which time he was stationed in Korea. He worked in the Paper Room at the Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, retiring with 33 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Bangor and attended Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Millinocket. Nick was also a lifetime member of Millinocket Elks Lodge #1521, Donald V. Henry Post #80 of the American Legion, and Francis Elliott Post #4154 of the VFW.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 52 years, Grace (Thibodeau) George of Milllinocket; the love of his life, his daughter, Stephanie A. George of Holden; a sister, Sophia Wirta and her significant other, Donald Berry of Glenburn; a very special niece, who was like a daughter to him, Kathy Petrucci and her two children, Chris and Jenn of Chesire, Connecticut; two special nephews, Robert Wirta and his wife, Theresa, and their two boys, Nick and Daniel of Hampden and Mark Wirta and his wife, Marnie, and their children, Sophia and Alex, of Bangor; and two special cousins, Paul and Tina Garbedien of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Celia Perroy of Elmhurst, Illinois. He also leaves many close and special friends in the Millinocket area, especially Maurice Strout. In addition to his parents, Nick was predeceased by the husband of his niece, Norf Petrucci. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Kim Faloon, Millinocket Regional Hospital, Dr. Andrescue and the staff at the Lafayette Center in Brewer for the care and love shown to Nick during his 2 1/2 years battling Acute Leukemia.
A Christian Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 4, at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford Street, Bangor, with Father Leo Schefe, pastor, officiating. Private interment with military honors will be at Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Nicholas may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462.
