GFWC/Miosac Club news

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Fourteen members and one guest, Nora Dow, of the GFWC/Miosac Club met at Thayer Parkway Nov. 1. President Anne Cress called the meeting to order and welcomed members. Suzanne Raymond lead the Club Collect, American’s Creed and Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Diane Leighton took roll and read the minutes of the last meeting  which were approved as read. Treasurer Pat Jones gave her report.

Corresponding Secretary Roxy McGlauflin read correspondence from the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis regarding the Community Christmas Program — 180 children are on the list. Members voted to continue the club’s support. Several members volunteered to be “elves” and do the shopping.

Raymond and then Barb Austin noted the Christmas Party will be held Dec.  13 at Austin’s home. Members will draw names and then purchase a toy that reminds them of the person whose  name  they drew. The toys will be given to the Kiwanis program

Community Directory Chairman Carol Kilpatrick gave a report on the progress of the directory.

Cress conducted a  first-time induction ceremony for new member Wendy Hutchins. Hutchins has volunteered to chair the art show this year.

Pat Jones requested that e-mail addresses of associate members be listed in the club booklet. The request was approved.  

Club bylaws need to be updated to coincide with GFWC Maine. Raymond will chair that committee and members Rheba MIchaud and Elaine Larson will serve on it.

Minnie McCormick spoke about the veterans home in Bangor and requested that a motion be made  that the club gather items needed at the home  The vote was carried and the will be more information in the future .

Austin spoke about the Kiwanis Community  Christmas, the number of children to be served and what can be done to assist. Children from newborn to age  17 are in need. The vote was carried and the following members volunteered to do the shopping: Kilpatrick, Austin, Michaud, Brenda Quiet, Elaine Larson, McGlauflin, Betsey Ryan and Hutchins. Austin suggested toiletries and gift cards for the older children. Members were asked to bring their monetary contributions at the next meeting.

Larson showed the quilt she made for Linus Quilt Day and McCormick had a lap robe for the veterans home and six stuffed toys for Mayo Regional Hospital.

Following the meeting program chairman McCormick gave members a test on how well they knew their club programs. They learned a few things and recalled some of the information. McCormick then read some, “Where did that saying  originate?”

Refreshments of fancy breads were served from a table decorated with flags, red, white and blue tablecloth, plates and napkins and  notes regarding Veterans Day. A time of fellowship was enjoyed  before members left for home.

The next meeting will be Nov. 18 with Raymond, Ryan and Dot Finnemore as hostesses and program chairs.
