Brownville-KI and Beyond Sled Dog Race results

BROWNVILLE JCT — Results from the seventh annual Maine Highlands Sled Dog Club and the town of Brownville’s Brownville-KI and Beyond Sled Dog Race, held on Jan. 30-31, are as follows:

HUSKY, BUT STILL ABLE TO RUN FAST Musher Kasey McCarty’s team finished in third place in the 30-mile race on Saturday, covering the course in a time of 2 hours, 45 minutes and 24 seconds.

Saturday 30-mile: 1. Rico Portalatin 2 hours, 12 minutes and 10 seconds; 2. Marla Brodsky 2:36.43; 3. Kasey McCarty 2:45.24; 4. Terry Knowles 2:49.57; 5. Whatleigh Torsey 3:00.46; 6. Carol Durant 3:06.52; 7. Catherine Benson 4:02.04; and 8. Maggie Wey disqualified.

Saturday 20-mile: 1. Amy deWolski 1:34.35; 2. Kelly Berg 1:41.20; 3. Kim Berg 1:42.21; 4. Sydney Plante 1:46.13; 5. Peggy Kipp 1:48.38; 6. Tessa Kemp 2:03.51; 7. Tony Chambrello 2:06.23; 8. Jean Bollweg 2:07.18; 9. Jeff Ladd 2:11.19; and 10. Racheal Arnold 2:15.09.

Saturday fun run (various distances): Gina Duyour 1:35.22; Linda Powers 2:31.21; Bob Jones 1:30.50; Sean deWolski 2:19.17; Brittney Robinson 1:20.50; Val Parent 1:26.45; Shannon Rioux 42:04; and Don Banker 45:03.

Sunday 20-mile: 1. Amy deWolski 1:41.50; 2. Kelly Berg 1:45.57; 3. Kim Berg 1:47.56; 4. Sydney Plante 1:57.34; 5. Marla Brodsky 2:04.36; 6. Whatleigh Torsey 2:10.45; 7. Madison Plante 2:11.28; 8. Racheal Arnold 2:23.28; 9. Ron Bates 2:33.12; 10. Jean Bollweg 2:39.33; and 11. Catherine Benson 2:54.02.

Sunday fun run (various distances): Jan McCannon 1:15.19; Sean deWolski 2:17.54; Linda Powers 2:07.01; Michele Chase 24:40; and Don Banker 1:47.42.

THE JUNCTION GOES TO THE DOGS  Catherine Benson and her team start their approximate 30-mile journey on Saturday. The two-day event featured three races on Jan. 30 and another two on Jan. 31.

FUTURE RACER A husky puppy, just over 10 weeks old and sitting by its mother, began to learn about the racing process over the weekend in Brownville Jct.

OVER THE HILLS AND THROUGH THE WOODS  Whatleigh Torsey’s dogsled team rounds the first turn in the Brownville-KI and Beyond Sled Dog Race 30-mile course on Jan. 30. The weekend’s various races featured trail support from the Brownville Snowmobile Club and communications support from the Piscataquis Amateur Radio Club.

HOWLING AND BARKING UP A STORM  Prior to the first race on Saturday morning, many of the various dog sled team members began to bark and howl in anticipation of heading out onto the trail.
