First annual Dover-Foxcroft WINDOW DRESSERS community build
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Maine Highlands Senior Center and Thriving in Place Collaborative are pleased to announce the first annual WINDOW DRESSERS community build scheduled for Dec. 7-11 at the Storefront (old Mr. Paperback building).
The measuring team has sized up over 250 windows for insulating inserts in 25 homes or businesses in nine communities. These simple inserts are estimated to potentially save hundreds of dollars over the heating season in heating costs for these buildings. Each family or facility receiving inserts has committed to be a part of the assembly process in some way, either by helping feed the volunteers or by volunteering time and energy to construct the inserts.
“We are just so thrilled at the response to this first year’s effort. People are really getting excited,” says Dr. Lesley Fernow, coordinator of the project. “It is going to be a great week building inserts and building community.”
Each window needing an insert has been individually measured by the team and the measurements sent by computer to the construction facility in Rockland. The pine frames will be cut, assembled and painted in Rockland. The team will then pick up the frames and bring them back to Dover Foxcroft to be wrapped with clear polyolefin film, taped and weather-stripped by volunteers.
The 4-hour work shifts are 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with an extra evening shift on Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. Organizers are still looking for more volunteers to help with this process.
If interested in being part of this exciting project or if you are a student looking for some community service, those involved would love to sign you up. Please contact Jan Velli at janv@tds.net or Dr.Fernow at lmfernow@rcn.com or 992-6822 for more information.
