SENIOR CENTER DONATION Dr. Lesley Fernow, center, spoke to the GFWC/Miosac Club about the Maine Highlands Senior Center during the club’s Nov. 3 meeting at Thayer Parkway in Dover-Foxcroft. Following the presentation Club President Vicki Moschella, left, and Betsey Ryan gave Dr. Fernow a $291 check for the project.

Dr. Fernow has been associated with this project for several years. Progress is being made with much effort.  Hopefuly the Maine Highlands Senior Center will be ready by 2017. It has been a $2.3 million renovation, housing a kitchen for the daycare area and one on the second floor for the event center.  The first floor will be dedicated to the elderly and will also have a full medical care. Medicare and VA will pay expenses for the elderly. There will be a conference room where seniors can congregate to talk with professionals and a resource room they can use. The building has been inspected by the fire marshal. There are three partners to help with expenses, Charlotte White Center, town of Dover-Foxcroft and Center Theatre.

Dr. Fernow also spoke about window dressings she is involved with. They are available to low income families and by cost to private citizens.

Following the talk, President Vicki Moschella and Betsey Ryan presented Dr. Fernow with a check for $291.19.  The odd amount is comprised of the traveling basket monies, President’s Project and change members put into a jar at every meeting. Dr. Fernow was surprised and so pleased — this also falls under the GFWC Maine President’s Project Elder Abuse.

Moschella called the meeting to order, welcoming members and thanking hostesses Diane Leighton and Roxy McGlauflin. Minnie McCormick led the Collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary, treasurer and other committee reports  were read. McGlauflin read a thank you from GFWC Maine President Marge Goodwin.

McCormick advised the next meeting will be Nov. 17 with hostesses Brenda Quiet and Rheba Michaud. McCormick  will be speaking about USO which falls under her GFWC Maine Project.  She also reported that 140 cards were sent to Operation Write Home.

Members made their contributions to the Kiwanis Community Christmas Project. Barb Austin noted the the Toys for Tots run was not as successful as expected, resulting in fewer toys. She suggested instead of members exchanging gifts, they purchase a toy that reminds them of the person whose name they draw and then give the toys to the Kiwanis. Members voted to do so.

Members voted to have a yard sale in the summer.

Public service announcements: the Christmas sing-a-long will be presented Nov. 28 at the Methodist church and the Kris Kringle Koffee will be at the Congregation Church Dec. 5.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served.
