Making art about community culture at SeDoMoCha
DOVER-FOXCROFT — During art this year with teacher Bobbi Tardif, students are making the SeDoMoCha School a place of collaboration and discovery.
Grade 4 line art
Fourth-graders created individual artwork based on different types of line. When creating, students had no idea that their drawings of warm and cool colors would be displayed together to create one gigantic line. These lines are being displayed in the art room for all to enjoy.
Fifth-graders wrapped a form to transform space. They did this by individually wrapping tree branches and assembling it as, piece by piece, the space changed as students started to assemble the near 12-foot tree in the lobby. In the end the wrapped tree installation shows the outcome of what students can accomplish together. This project makes a connection with students because of the direct correlation to what they have been studying and observing with trees in their science curriculum, said Tardif.
Grade 7 students’ prehistoric inspired Lascaux Cave art project is a great example of teachers working toward a common goal in educating the students to meet common standards. Students learned about the Stone Age in social studies and created their own 3-D prehistoric cave art, similar to that of the site in France, that is displayed in the hall.
Tardif and art teacher Martha Ladd are taking collaborative learning beyond the classroom and school walls. They are achieving this by working with the Center Theatre on the upcoming production of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”. Students are creating posters to promote the play around town and on the performance T-shirts.
“I want to engage my students and create an environment of acceptance and achievement,” Tardiff said. “Here at SeDoMoCha as we collaborate together, the teachers, students and the community are able to enjoy finding successes in so many different ways!”
