Retired educator news
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Retired Educators Association met Sept. 22 at The Bear’s Den with 14 members and two guests present. President Gil Reynolds welcomed all. Gloria Burns led the collect and Reynolds led the Pledge of Allegiance. Burns then read the minutes of the last meeting. Myrna Ricker gave the treasurer’s report — both were accepted as read.
Annis
Reynolds reported on the meeting he had attended in Augusta. No one applied for the two grants available through the MEA.
There was discussion of the Esther Pennington Scholarship. A student from Piscataquis Community High School received the award but the association has not been notified, Reynolds will look into the matter. Rheba Michaud thanked all for their help in providing the community dinner in August.
Reynolds introduced Eric Annis of the Lary Funeral Home. Annis spoke about the business and his background. He worked with his father for several years and now his son Ethan works with him. Annis talked about trusts and how they work. If anyone has a trust with the funeral home and pass away somewhere else, they will make arrangements to get them home. Some members noted that they had trusts with Lary Funeral Home.
Reynolds brought up the Leadership Award and Martha Rollins’ name was presented. The motion was seconded and members voted on it.
Minnie McCormick conducted a Necrology Service for members who have passed away. She placed roses in the vase for Becky Johnson, Catherine Richards and Maggie Poulin who all taught locally and Hope LaCourciere who taught in Connecticut but did subbing after she returned to Dover-Foxcroft.
A discussion of having a Christmas party followed. Members voted to hold it at Thayer Parkway and the Christmas Party will be held Monday, Dec. 7. Rollins will be in touch to make arrangements for food.
The regular meetings are done for the year and will resume in April.
