Kiwanis backpack program to continue throughout summer

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis announced that it will be continuing the successful school backpack program throughout the summer. The program, which provided a monthly weekend backpack will also be expanded for the summer. The Kiwanis will be offering backpacks every weekend throughout the summer for any child in the community. The program will be based out of the Morton Avenue Municipal Building and backpacks can be picked up each Friday between 11 a.m. and noon.  Backpacks can be returned the next week to the Dover-Foxcroft Town Office or the Piscataquis Regional YMCA.

“We’re very happy to be continuing the backpack program through the summer,” said Deb Somers with the Kiwanis. “We’ve received great support from the YMCA and other community partners to make it possible. We hope that lots of kids drop in every Friday all summer long.”

The Kiwanis backpack program is scheduled to coordinate with the free lunches being offered at SeDoMoCha through the summer between 11 a.m. and noon. “We hope kids get lunch at SeDo. and then drop in at Morton for a backpack on Friday,” said Patrick Myers with the Piscataquis Regional YMCA.

Before a child can receive a backpack a parent/guardian must complete a permission form. The short form can be completed the first time a child comes to get a backpack.  If anyone has questions about the program, please contact Somers at 270-0188 or Myers at 564-7111. The program is a partnership between the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Charities, Piscataquis Regional YMCA and area food cupboards.
