Memorial 5K scheduled June 13

DEXTER — This week marks the fourth anniversary of one of Maine’s worst domestic violence cases that led to the deaths of four people.

Amy Lake and her children, Coty and Monica, were killed on June 13, 2011 by her estranged husband, Steven, who then took his own life. Amy Lake was a kindergarten teacher at Ridge View Community School and a coworker of Kelly Worden Gay.

Every year since then, Gay has organized and chaired the Amy, Coty, Monica Memorial 5K Race/Walk to End Domestic Violence starting and ending at Dexter Regional High School.

This year’s event gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 13.

“This may be my last year running it,” said Gay. “But it’s hard to step away completely, considering what we’ve gone through just in the past year. It’s been brutal.”

A few days before Christmas 2014, the bodies of Christina Sargent, 36; her son, Duwayne Coke, 10; and her daughter, Destiny Sargent, 8, were found in their mobile home in Exeter. Keith Coleman, 27, who lived with the family, has been charged with three counts of murder.

Duwayne and Destiny were students at Ridge View Community School.

Last year $14,500 was raised for proximity monitoring systems for domestic violence abusers which consists of a bracelet on the offender and a pager for the victim. If the abuser comes within a restricted zone, such as the victim’s home, a law enforcement agency can be notified instantly.

The program has also been implemented on a trial basis in Somerset and Kennebec counties, said Gay, and the program may be expanded statewide. “So if the money is not needed for the monitoring system at this time, proceeds from the race will be donated to Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance,” Gay said.

The nonprofit Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance provides information and support to people of all ages affected by abuse and domestic violence throughout Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties.

Approximately 450 people participated in last year’s run-walk; and as of Friday, more than 300 have preregistered for this year’s event, Gay said. “So that’s a real good sign. I think we’ll exceed last year’s turnout,” she added.

Registrations are $25 for adults and $20 for students and there will be awards for the adult male and female winners, boy and girl winners and top sponsor fund collector.

T-shirts guaranteed to all pre-registered entries and race day entries will receive a t-shirt while supplies last.

One minor change this year is the location of the vendor booths. Previously, they were set up on the school grounds, but they’ll be in Guiski Gymnasium this Saturday.

Race day registration will take place from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and an online form is on the 5th Annual Amy, Coty and Monica 5K Facebook page.
