DOVER-FOXCROFT — The man accused of shooting his father to death in Parkman two weeks ago made his first court appearance May 28 wearing a white plastic medical helmet.

Zachery Grant, 38, of Abbot is facing a murder charge in the death of David Grant, 61, on May 12 at his rural home. The state medical examiner’s office determined that Grant died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Zachery Grant was found injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face when police arrived at his father’s home. He initially went to Eastern Maine Medical Center and later was treated at Acadia Hospital where he was arrested late Wednesday afternoon.

At the arraignment, it appeared that Grant’s left eye was completely closed, and he had bandages around his neck as he stood in Piscataquis County Superior Court.

District Court Judge Bruce Jordan, who signed Grant’s arrest warrant last Wednesday, also signed a request by the attorney general’s office to impound the probable cause affidavit until a grand jury has had a chance to review the case.

Homicide prosecutor Lisa Marchese made the request to impound the affidavit, Assistant District Attorney Tracy Collins told District Court Judge Patrick Ende, who was on the bench Thursday for Grant’s first appearance.

“It is a sensitive case,” Collins said.

“The complaint alleges murder,” Ende said to Grant. “I will not ask for a plea because you have a right to be indicted by a grand jury.”

The Piscataquis County grand jury is scheduled to meet in June, attorney for the day Chris Smith said. No future court date was set for Grant, who remains in Piscataquis County Jail.

Grant has minor criminal convictions on his record, all from the early 2000s, including criminal mischief, writing a bad check, and operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, a background check by the Bureau of Identification states.

Ende assigned Bangor attorney Jeffrey Silverstein as Grant’s court appointed attorney.
