Ruth Buzzell turns 90
Ruth Loane Buzzell was born on Jan. 13, 1925 in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Bertrand and Helen Loane.
She always referred to herself as a “country girl” but as a small child she came to live in Guilford and be raised by her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Marsh, as her parents passed away early in her life.
Buzzell is the second child of three, an older brother Marsh (deceased) and a sister Alice. Buzzell attended schools in Fort Fairfield and recalls riding to school in a horse-drawn sleigh on which was a little house with a small wood stove to keep the children’s feet warm.
She graduated from Guilford High School in 1943. She then attended and graduated from Leland Powers School of Theater and Radio in Boston in 1945.
In 1947, she married Sidney Buzzell of Sangerville. They made their home in Sangerville and owned a partnership in the H.E Buzzell and Son store on Main Street. They raised two daughters, Helen Feldman, R.N and Jeanne Cookson, a retired kindergarten teacher.
During the late 1960s Sidney Buzzell became a Methodist minister. They sold the store and moved to East Corinth and ministered there as well as Grace Methodist Church in Bangor and the Guilford Methodist Church.
Buzzell worked as postmaster in the Sangerville Post office, she graduated from Mansfield’s School of Cosmetology in Bangor and worked at BMHI as a beautician.
She sang alto in church choirs and was an organist at the Sangerville United Church for several years. Buzzell participated in UMW groups in all churches the couple served where she entertained as a Christian clown at several events. She and her husband were caregivers at the Alzheimer’s day care, My Friends Place at First United Methodist Church in Bangor.
Buzzell retired in 1993 and moved to a home on Randolph Drive in Bangor. She and her husband participated in troop greeting at Bangor International Airport and joined Heartwise. Buzzell has traveled to California and to Israel. She always enjoyed entertaining in her home or at camp through the years. Buzzell currently resides at the Hibbard Skilled Nursing Center in Dover-Foxcroft.
