Katherine B. Libby
DOVER-FOXCROFT – Katherine B. Libby died on January 5, 2015, at Hibbard Nursing Home in Dover-Foxcroft after valiantly fighting a lengthy illness.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence E. “Dick” Libby, Jr., in 2003.
She relinquished her independence very hesitantly as she transitioned from her home, then to senior living, and finally to the nursing home where she lived for the past one and a half years.
Kaye was born in Vanceboro, ME, on February 20, 1928, to Thomas and Charlotte Evelyn (McKinnon) Burns, and was the youngest of four children. She cherished her Canadian and Scottish roots and hosted summer gatherings of all relatives who could visit her and Dick’s summer camp on Sebec Lake.
She was a graduate of Foxcroft Academy and attended the University of Maine. Upon Dick’s return from World War II, they married and lived in Dover-Foxcroft and Lamoine for their entire married life. Her life revolved around family, a very strong faith, work, her friends, avid reading until her eyesight was claimed by macular degeneration, and playing cards with a longtime group of female friends. She was an active advocate of higher education.
During her lifetime, she worked for New England Telephone Co., Mayo Hospital, and as a travel agent for Bar Harbor Airlines. She was a former member and officer of the Mocutoc Club during her earlier days in Dover-Foxcroft.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she leaves her son, Dr. Michael Libby and his wife, Annalee (Korsman) Libby (Kaye’s angel), of Old Town and Blanchard; her daughter, Kathy Castonguay and her husband, James, of Greenville; and her only, most-prized grandchild, Jarod Castonguay, his wife, Jennifer (Merrill), and their son, Kyle, of Gray.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Paul Burns and Joseph Burns; and her older sister, Mary Carmel (Burns) Warren.
The entire family is grateful to her lifetime friend, Harriett Moen, who remained faithful until the very end; to the many employees of Hibbard Nursing Home who surpassed their job descriptions to make her stay comfortable; and to her wonderful roommate, Roberta Sawyer, whose soothing presence was a gift. Kaye’s family also extends a very grateful thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Dennis for her compassionate care.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at 3 p.m., Friday, January 9, 2015, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Dover-Foxcroft, with Rev. Joseph Cahill officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to are asked to donate to the Hibbard Nursing Home Activity Fund in Kaye’s honor, 1037 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
