GUILFORD — When it comes to freshness, it’s hard to top a Subway.

And while there are always old favorites on the menu, new products and specials are introduced constantly.
These are some of the reasons why business is growing steadily at the Guilford Subway, owned and operated by Peter and Carla Dougeneck of Athens since March 2011.
“Subway’s focus has always been on freshness and quality. We follow their standards and they’re very precise,” said Peter Dougeneck.
There have been numerous improvements at Guilford Subway — some noticeable, some subtle. A breakfast menu has been added, but it’s not restricted to morning hours. “You can order anything with eggs any time you like,” Peter said.
Some of the kitchen equipment has been upgraded and renovations to the serving line are in the planning stages.
Another new feature is the Subway app for a smartphone where customers can pre-order their selections.
Another key player in Guilford Subway’s success is manager Skye Ibscher, who not only understands the company philosophy but “has a great rapport with her customers,” said Carla Dougeneck.
The Guilford Subway currently has seven employees. “It’s a great crew,” she added.
The Dougenecks have also owned the Skowhegan Subway for the past 10 years. “I started working for a grocery chain when I was 16. Later, I worked for the phone company, and that’s where I met Carla,” Peter said. “So we’ve been involved with customer service for most of my life.”
What are the current hot sellers at Guilford Subway? The manager says that she sells a lot of BMT, meatball and all types of chicken sandwiches. “We have our regulars who order almost the same thing every time they come in, but we see a lot of new faces, too,” said Ibscher.
One of the current nationally-advertised specials is the “Simple $6 Menu” – six popular 6-inch subs for $6 each.

Guilford Subway is open seven days a week, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
