Mental health first aid comes to the county

DOVER-FOXCROFT — NAMI Maine, in collaboration with NAMI Piscataquis County, is hosting a Mental Health First Aid training on Friday, Jan. 30 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Charlotte White Center in Dover-Foxcroft.
With one in four Mainers facing some mental health condition in their lives, it is certain that most people will have someone close to them whose life is significantly impacted by their mental health.

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based, research-proven program designed to enable everyday citizens to be able to help their neighbors and family members.
If you have ever wondered how to ask a friend if they were depressed or to talk to a loved one about their substance use, this training is designed to give attendees the tools to do so.
This innovative training teaches participants to identify – and appropriately respond to – signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The cost for this 8-hour training is $5 which includes a comprehensive training manual, lunch, customized resource guide and ongoing support from NAMI Maine.
Those who complete the course are then certified for  three years by the National Council for Behavioral Health as a Mental Health First Aide specialist.
