James Horace Salley
DOVER-FOXCROFT – James Horace Salley died peacefully on Thursday, October 16, 2014, just one month shy of his 90th birthday, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Jim was born in Dover-Foxcroft on November 16, 1924, to Harry and Ila (Merrill) Salley, and on August 5, 2014, Jim and his loving wife, Mary E. (Herring) Salley, celebrated 65 years of wedded bliss.
After graduating from Foxcroft Academy in 1943, Jim served with the United States Army in the European Theater until 1946. Upon his return to Dover-Foxcroft, he worked at Railroad Express, at the First National Store for 33 years, several of which were as Store Manager, and at Moosehead Manufacturing for 9 years, before retiring in 1990.
He was a charter member of the Dover-Foxcroft Jaycees, a Past Commander and member for more than 50 years of the American Legion Post No. 29, and a lifetime member and Past Master of the Mosaic Masonic Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M., serving as secretary for 19 years, and spending many hours preparing candidates for the ceremony of initiation. Jim was also a lifetime member of Piscataquis Royal Arch Chapter No. 21 and Central Council No. 18, and a 22 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He belonged to Anah Shriners, Tri County Shrine, and was a past member of St. John’s Commandry in Bangor. Lastly, he was a member of the Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church all of his life and a member of the Piscataquis Regional YMCA for 20-plus years.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Roderick James and his wife, Kathleen, of Richmond, VA; daughter, Judith Salley Getchell of Dover-Foxcroft; three grandchildren, Adam and his wife, Amy, of Winter Haven, FL, Maquel and her husband, Alan Derosby, of Vassalboro, and Casey Lynn Getchell of Dover-Foxcroft; two step-grandchildren, Chris Hicks of Floyd, VA, and Tommy Santin and his wife, Rachel, of Nixon, TX; three great-granddaughters, Avery and Paige Salley, and Sofia Derosby; three step-great-grandchildren, Hunter Hicks, Tyler and Makayla Santin. He is also survived by sisters, Harriet Moen, and Lois Farr, both of Dover-Foxcroft, and Laura Tyler of South Portland; and a brother, John Salley of Dexter.
He was predeceased by a brother, Amasa Salley; sisters, Phyllis Brackett and Margaret Sheldon; and his parents.
Jim was an avid sports fan, particularly of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, but more importantly, of the many sports in which his grandchildren participated. He travelled many miles, from Connecticut and Massachusetts to California and all around Maine, to cheer them on. Because of his Masonic ties, Jim supported his son in the Order of DeMolay and daughter in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and was an advisory board member of the Rainbow Assemblies to which his daughter, Judy, and granddaughter, Casey, belonged. Jim was very proud of his family.
Services were held at the Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church, with a Masonic service at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2014, followed by an Eastern Star service and then a memorial service with Pastor Mark Stevens officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to either Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston or Springfield, c/o Anah Shriners, 586 Main Street, Bangor 04402, or to the Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church, PO Box 62, Dover-Foxcroft 04426.
