Sangerville

Organ concert raises funds for church campaign

By Barbara Wilbur

SANGERVILLE — Spiritual, joyous, beautiful, magnificent. These are only a few of the descriptive words used to express the sentiments of the audience following the benefit  concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sangerville and Dover- Foxcroft.

Sarah Johnson, a former Dexter Regional High School student and now a junior music major at Vassar College, donated her talents playing the church’s Jesse Woodberry and Co. 1898 organ. Johnson was quoted as saying how much she loved playing this historic organ. This very talented young lady played pieces of Mendelssohn, Bach, Beethoven and Barber. She played hymn tunes by R.V. Williams and the audience sang a similarly familiar hymn. She ended the evening with Bach. She was given a standing ovation for her fine performance.
The concert was one in a series of events scheduled in the ongoing fundraising campaign for restoration of  the stained glass windows at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft. The membership of the church wishes to thank Johnson for her time and for sharing her wonderful talent. We also wish to thank the audience for their generous donations. It was a definite boost to our restoration fundraising campaign.
Many of the concert attendees also took advantage of the card sales. There are post cards and note cards of the stained glass windows available. They will be for sale at the farmers’ market in Dover- Foxcroft Sept. 27 and at the church’s Procrastinators Fair in December. The cards are also available every Sunday morning. For more information about the cards and/or purchasing them call Sue Griffith at 876-4569.
Mark your calendar for Oct. 4. We will be offering a harvest dinner at the East Sangerville Grange. All the food served will be locally grown or raised. Doors will be open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. There will be music performed by Jason Curran and Peter Ippoliti as well as a  presentation by farmers’ market representative Jackie Robinson on food production.
