Milo native’s miniature woodpile raffle to help vets

Staff Report

MILO — A Milo native has created hand-crafted miniature woodpiles representing each of the five branches of the military.
But instead of selling them outright, Paul Sherburne is raffling them off and donating the proceeds to Wounded Warriors Family Support.

A drawing will be held on Veterans’ Day, Nov. 14, by Wounded Warriors Family Support who will compile the ticket information and select one winner for each military branch.
Tickets are being sold online for $1.84 each.
Why the odd number? Sherburne explains that it costs 84 cents for processing fees, so $1 will go to Wounded Warriors Family Support.
Sherburne is also an author as well as a crafter. Following graduation from Milo High School in 1957, Rogers served as an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy (post-Korea and pre-Vietnam).
He earned the first of three college degrees (mathematics, psychology and management), culminating in a doctorate from Michigan State University in 1968.
A series of positions in university administration was followed by a twenty year career as a small business owner and retail store planning consultant.    Rogers retired to Florida in the late 1990s to share time with his two brothers (snowbirds) and his parents.
After 10 years, after the passing of his parents and with one daughter and a pair of grandchildren living on each coast (Connecticut and Washington states), he converted lifestyles to become a full-time RV’er.
Now, he’s augmenting his travel fund by working for the U.S. Marine Corps in eastern North Carolina. There he writes, gets to play golf with military pilots and ground support crew people, and enjoys watching old-style Carolina boat builders and woodcraftsmen at work.
He plans to retire again in 2016 and hopes to continue his travels.
