DOVER-FOXCROFT — The seventh annual Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament will tee off on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Foxcroft Golf Club and event chairman Tim Richardson is anticipating a good turnout once again.
“We’ve been averaging 80 to 100 golfers each year (20 to 25 teams) and this is the first time we’re having the tournament at Foxcroft,” Richardson said. “They’ve supported us for years, so we’re looking forward to playing there. The new owners have made a lot of changes to improve the course.”

RIDING THE GREEN — David Robinson and John Engdahl take a spin on the course at a recent tournament.
For the first time ever, the tournament also has a presenting sponsor: Rowell’s Garage in Dover-Foxcroft. “They are a very community-minded business,” Richardson said.
Hight Chevrolet-Buick-GMC of Skowhegan is sponsoring the Hole-in-One Challenge and A.E. Robinson is hosting the post-tournament dinner.
Format is a shotgun start, four-person, best-ball scramble with no handicaps figured and the cost is $40 person, excluding cart rental. Tee times are at 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.
“It’s the lowest-priced tournament on the Jimmy Fund circuit, but we keep the price reasonable because we want to encourage local golfers to enjoy it,” Richardson said. “We also have teams from Machias, Ellsworth, Saco, Presque Isle and Sutton, Mass. who come up to play each year.”
Hot dogs and chips will be offered on the course, and a dinner and live auction takes place after the second group of golfers is finished.
For non-golfers, there are a limited number of dinner tickets available for $20 each.
The local tournament has raised more than $55,000 for cancer research since it started, Richardson said. “Cancer has touched a lot of people in the community,” he noted. “Just about every business in the area has backed this tournament in one way or another.”
The Jimmy Fund solely supports Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, ranked as one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation.
The Dana-Farber Institute was founded in 1947 by Dr. Sidney Farber, who is regarded as the “father” of modern chemotherapy.
The institute employs nearly 4,000 people supporting more than 300,000 patient visits a year, is involved in some 700 clinical trials, and is internationally renowned for its blending of research and clinical excellence, according to the Jimmy Fund website.
Dana-Farber also maintains joint programs with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
The Red Sox formed a partnership with the Jimmy Fund on April 10, 1953 after the Braves left Boston for Milwaukee and has continued to support the organization. The anniversary of the partnership generally falls just before the Red Sox home opener, celebrated with the display of the Boston Red Sox/Jimmy Fund logo on the “Green Monster” in Fenway Park.
