Swedish descendents picnic Sunday at Whetstone Pond

    ABBOT — The annual picnic and meeting of the Swedish descendants will be held on Sunday, July 20 at noon beginning with a pot luck picnic. The reunion will be held at the lakeside home of Bill and Jane Macomber at Whetstone Pond. Take the Piper Pond Road just outside Abbot on Route 15 and follow the signs with balloons. 

    After lunch a social time and business meeting will follow. In lieu of a program there will be a discussion on fundraising to have the names of four miners added to the existing Portland Monson Slate Company headstone in Monson.
    All the quarry workers were immigrants without family in Monson. Six have their names on the cemetery monument but the remaining four were buried after the headstone was set in place and are only found by researching the cemetery records.
