Murray and Merchant honored as top UMaine scholar-athletes

    ORONO — Two members of the University of Maine women’s swim team, sophomore Amber Murray of Dover-Foxcroft and junior Kayla Merchant of Sebec, were recently honored by the university for their academic achievements. Murray and Merchant were recognized as two of 195 Black Bear Scholar-Athletes, who attained a 3.0 GPA or higher during the 2013 year and/or had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

    Murray, who is studying food science and human nutrition in the Honors College, was named a Bronze Scholar-Athlete which signifies the first time she has received the Scholar-Athlete honor.
    A 2012 graduate of Foxcroft Academy, Murray competes in the backstroke for Maine. She is the daughter of Cathalina and Thomas Murray.
    A child development and family relations major, Merchant was also named a Bronze Scholar-Athlete. The Bangor Christian School graduate swims the freestyle for the Black Bears. Merchant is the daughter of Tammy Palmer and David Merchant.
