Foxcroft girls finish third at PVC swimming championship
BANGOR — The girls from Foxcroft Academy swam to a third-place performance at the Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) Swimming and Diving Championship on Feb. 8 at Husson University. The Ponies compiled a score of 147 points to place third out of 14 schools, trailing only the 328 for first-place Mount Desert Island High School and 216 for Bangor High School.
Julia Annis had the day’s fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, as she swam the event in 1 minute, 9.68 seconds. She also placed second in the 200 IM at 2:17.70.
Annis was part of a pair of top three relay teams. In the 200 freestyle relay Avery Carroll, Gabie Johnson, Jillian Annis and Julia Annis came in second at 1:48.27. The Pony 200 medley relay team, comprised of Carroll, Julia Annis, Johnson and Jillian Annis, had a time of 1:59.18 to finish third.
Carroll was the PVC runner-up in the 100 backstroke as she swam a time of 1:04.79. Right behind was Johnson in third place at 1:05.12. Carroll also came in third in the 200 IM at 2:20.94.
Johnson had the meet’s second-fastest time in the 100 freestyle at 57:77 seconds. She was the first of three Foxcroft swimmers to place in the event as Jillian Annis came in eighth at 1:05.17 and 16th was Zoey Wang at 1:07.20. Both Annis and Wang scored points in the 50 freestyle, with Annis seventh at 28.62 seconds and Wang coming in 17th with a time of 30.36 seconds.
Foxcroft’s 400 freestyle relay team was 10th in the standings with a time of 5:07.74. Making up the squad was the quartet of Ally Bradshaw, Nora Fleck, Renee Shorey and Wang.
On Feb. 7 the Pony boys swam in the PVC championship. Foxcroft tallied 65 points to place seventh.
Clay Carroll had the highest finish for Foxcroft as he placed third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.26. He also came in fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54 seconds — eighth in the same event was Berke Taner with a time of 57.66 seconds.
Carroll and Taner were part of two top 10 relay teams. The Pony 200 freestyle relay — Taner, Leo Lai, Dexter Canning and Carroll — placed fifth with a time of 1:48.31. In eighth-place was Zachary Johnson, Carroll, Lai and Taner in the 200 medley relay at 2:08.00.
Also placing for the Ponies was Taner in the 50 freestyle, at 25.56 seconds and the 400 freestyle relay. Canning, Kevin Hua, Tony Tang and Johnson combined to swim the event in 5:19.54.
The Bangor boys won the team title with 375 points, nearly double MDI’s 189. The Rams took home boys’ top honors for the 28th time in 35 years.
