David Luke Friedrichs
ABBOT, ISLESBORO & WARREN, ME – David Luke Friedrichs was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on May 29, 1943.
He was a sailor, forester, ferryman, merchant mariner, and make-a-plan handyman.
Dave graduated from Christian Brothers College, Boksburg, and Saasveld Forestry College, South Africa. He set sail with the South African navy in 1961. Whilst docked in New York City, he met his Lynda. They married in the Cape in 1965, and made South Africa and Swaziland their home for 14 more years.
Forty-two acres of his own woods lured him to Abbot, ME, in 1979. Brad and Edith Limbert’s friendship there was paramount in their family’s success. The tidal pull of Islesboro called Dave to join the fine ferry crew and islanders in 1999, for 15 more years. They bought their Warren home, in August 2012, to be closer to their daughter and grandson. Dave and Lynda loved the Lot Valley, France, where they helped lifelong friends rebuild an old farmhouse over 12 annual visits. Charlotte’s Cove, and “camp” on Whetstone Pond were also treasured.
Dave ended his argument with Mesothelioma on Sunday, January 26, 2014.
He is survived by his Lynda Dianne of 49 years; their son, David and wife, Elizabeth, and Ian and Isabel Friedrichs, of Rochester, MA, and their daughter, Dena, and son, Alec Coughlin of Warren; Dave’s brothers, Duncan and Drummond, and sister, Nona, continue to live in Boksburg, South Africa. Many beloved family and friends from Africa to Oz live on. He hopes to be remembered when you hear Pachabel’s Canon, and Beethoven’s 9th chorus, “Ode to Joy”.
Please join us at an Open House to celebrate him on Saturday, February 15, noon to 3 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church, Warren.
