Trio of area squads cheer at Eastern Maine championships

BANGOR — The Dexter cheering squad will have an opportunity to defend its championship crown after qualifying for states Saturday in the Eastern Class C competition at the Cross Insurance Center.
Central took home top honors in the event, with a score of 127.4, followed by Narraguagus, 113.3; Houlton, 109.8; Sumner of East Sullivan, 108.8; Orono, 106.4; Dexter, 102.7; Bucksport, 101; Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, 99; Washington Academy of East Machias, 90.5; Calais, 87.9; Penquis of Milo, 84; Lee Academy, 83.8; and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, 54.

THE SEASON CONTINUES — The Dexter Regional High School cheering team will be competing in the Class C state championship next month, after finishing in sixth place at the regional finals on Jan. 25 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The Tigers scored 102.7 points to place sixth out of 13 squads. The berth in the state competition, on Feb. 8 at the Augusta Civic Center, is the team’s third in a row.
The top six squads advance to the state competition, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Augusta Civic Center.
Members of the Dexter squad include, Ciera Handy, Airell Knowlton, Shawna Moulton, Madison Provost, Sarah Ann Vigue, Shayna Fogg, Cayla Wyman, Jasmine Woodard, Katelyn Morgan, Stacey Allen, Olivia Day, Emmitt Ross, Jessica Chabot, MacKenzie Peatfield, Danielle Whitten, Martin Ward, Kristen Swimm and Grace Belanger.
The Penquis cheering squad includes Theresa Karpowicz, Becca Glidden Anisa Witham, Morgan Cavagnaro, Anna Rideout, Chelsey Applebee, Emily Gerrish, Linsley Karpowicz, Bethany Watts, Erica Bowden, Alyssa Murano, Zoe Berry, Ally Desfosses, Mariah Tuscano and Kayla Harmon.

PONY SHOW — Foxcroft Academy’s cheering squad took part in the Eastern Maine Class B finals at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Jan. 25. With 102 points, the Ponies came in ninth out of 15 teams.
In the Class B competition, Foxcroft Academy finished ninth and did not qualify for states.
Final team scores for Class B were Hermon with 145.1, followed by Ellsworth (142.8), Old Town (131.4), Presque Isle (130.3), Caribou (121.1), John Bapst (119.6), Erskine Academy of South China (108.7), Gardiner (106.1), Foxcroft Academy (102), Waterville (98.2), Nokomis of Newport (94.3), Mount View of Thorndike (88.9), Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor (88.9), Winslow (80.6) and Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston (70.7).
Team members of the Foxcroft Academy Ponies include Kellen Strout, Haley Winchenbach, Michelle Smith, Misty Stewart, Mackenzie Mazzeo, Amber Lewis, Shari Sage, Chelsey Curtis, Kimmy Hanson, Crystal Macomber, Sarah Hobbs, Abigail Warner, Camille Bozelli and Jessica Moore.
