MILO — A holiday tradition for the Milo/Brownville area continues in 2013, but this year in a new location. The annual free Christmas Day dinner for the community will be served on Wednesday, Dec. 25 in the early afternoon in the United Baptist Church dining room.
“We serve from noon to 1:30 p.m., this year the dinner is going to be ham,” said Nancy Cook, who along with her husband Walter and David and Terri Knowles is organizing the dinner. Cook said the church dining room is located on the lower level of the rear of the building on Pleasant Street.
For the last decade and a half the Christmas dinner, which was started by Everett and Freda Cook, enables members of the community to come together for a shared meal on the holiday. The dinner serves as a social opportunity for some residents who may otherwise be alone on Christmas, and in years past has averaged about 100 in attendance.
“We need volunteers on the 24th from 1-3 p.m. to set up the dining room and prepare the vegetables,” Cook said. “From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the 25th we need volunteers to help serve, clean up or provide a pie.”
Delivery will be available for those unable to be at the Christmas Day dinner, and meal delivery reservations need to be made by Monday, Dec. 23.
For home delivery, to volunteer on Dec. 24 and/or Dec. 25 or for more information on the Christmas Day dinner, please call Cook at 965-8410.
