HONORED — Rep. Peter Johnson recently received the Maine School Boards Association Distinguished Service Award from outgoing MSBA President Kristin Malin.

Johnson, who serves on the Legislature’s Education Committee and was chairman of the School Union 60 school committee, received his award at the Maine School Management Association Annual Fall Conference on Oct. 25.
In nominating him for the award, the Union 60 school board cited his leadership ability, collaborative nature and tireless efforts in support of students and rural schools.
Johnson has been a strong advocate for the Greenville Consolidated School and worked to not only upgrade the facility but open up greater college scholarship opportunities for its students.
As a member of the Greenville American Legion, Johnson helped increase the annual scholarship commitment to graduating high school seniors from $500 per year to $2,000.
Johnson also served for seven years as a board member of the Maine Small Schools Coalition, in support of small rural schools and against forced school consolidation.
As a four-term member of the Maine House of Representatives, he has worked against laws that penalize small districts and for better funding for rural schools and economically disadvantaged students.
He successfully helped get legislation passed that brought more state money to rural districts and also won support for an ongoing, independent review of the state school funding formula to see if it is treating all districts in the state fairly.
Johnson, who is finishing his fourth and final term in the Maine Legislature, serves Abbot, Beaver Cove, Bowerbank, Brownville, Cambridge, Greenville, Guilford, Monson, Parkman, Sebec, Shirley, Willimantic and Kingsbury Plantation.
